Lia Fernandes is a researcher at the Center for Health Technology and Services Research (CINTESIS), where she leads the GeriMHealth research group. At the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP), she is a Full Professor and Director of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences and Mental Health.
At FMUP, she is responsible for Psychiatric Diseases in the Postgraduate Program in Geriatrics, Director of the Master’s Degree in Psychiatry and Mental Health, and the Doctoral Program in Mental Health. She is also a lecturer and coordinator of the Specialization in Clinical Geriatrics at the same faculty.
She is currently a Senior Psychiatry Assistant at the Psychiatry Service (where she was responsible for the Gerontopsychiatry Unit until 2021) and a Family Therapist at the University Hospital Center of São João in Porto.
With a degree in Medicine (1987) from FMUP, a master’s degree in Psychiatry and Mental Health (1995), and a doctorate in Medicine (2005), having obtained the Habilitation degree in 2016 from the same institution, she is part of the international research network INTERDEM – Early, Timely and Quality Psychosocial Interventions in Dementia, and Porto4Ageing – Center of Excellence in Active and Healthy Aging. Since 2018, she has been a member of the Executive Board of the European Association of Geriatric Psychiatry and the Clinical Director of the Northern Delegation of the Association for Support of Depressive and Bipolar Patients (ADEB). Neurosciences, Psychogeriatrics, Psychiatry and Mental Health, and Chronic Respiratory Diseases (Asthma) are some of her research fields.
